Harriet Hageman once rebuked Trump and endorsed Liz Cheney. She's now challenging her with his support

In a speech endorsing Cheney’s 2016 congressional campaign Hageman attacked the “concerted efforts to force true conservatives to sit down and shut up,” adding those efforts “have never worked on me and I know that they will not work on and have no effect on Liz Cheney.”

The comments from Hageman, found by CNN’s KFile in footage of the Wyoming Republican Party’s convention that year, show the abrupt about-face from the Wyoming attorney, who received Trump’s backing in the GOP primary against Cheney earlier this month. Once a leader of efforts to oppose Trump’s nomination, she now calls Trump “the greatest president of my lifetime.”

“I know that Liz Cheney is a proven, courageous, constitutional conservative, someone who has the education, the background and experience to fight effectively for Wyoming on a national stage,” Hageman said in 2016. “There have been and will continue to be concerted efforts to force true conservatives to sit down and shut up. Those efforts have never worked on me and I know that they will not work on and have no effect on Liz Cheney. I am proud to introduce Liz Cheney as the next congressional representative from the great state of Wyoming.”

Earlier in the remarks, while introducing Cheney, Hageman calls her “my friend” and someone who will bring a “national spotlight” to federal overreach in the state.

The video of Hageman’s remarks comes as the New York Times reported that Hageman, then a delegate for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, took part in efforts to block Trump from receiving the nomination at the Republican National Convention in 2016. Cruz, backed by Hageman, won all 14 delegates at the Wyoming convention.

Hageman, according to the New York Times, called Trump “racist and xenophobic” in 2016.

In a lengthy statement to CNN, Hageman attacked Cheney for not being “Wyoming in the sense of what that means,” and said that Cheney’s “betrayal started well before the 2020 election.”

“At a time when we needed all hands on deck, Liz Cheney jumped ship, dogpaddled to the other side, and is now shooting back at us,” said Hageman. “When Liz Cheney voted to impeach President Trump, she betrayed Wyoming, she betrayed this country, and she betrayed me. Most of the people of Wyoming feel the same way.”

A video of the Republican National Convention in 2016 also shows Hageman voting in support of “unbinding” delegates — making delegates free to vote for whatever presidential candidate they choose regardless of the results of a caucus or primary in the state.
The movement to “unbind” delegates was seen as a last chance for anti-Trump Republicans to prevent Trump from becoming the Republican nominee in 2016.
During a lengthy RNC rules committee meeting in July 2016, Hageman spoke in support of incentivizing states to hold closed primaries — so that only registered Republicans could vote in GOP primaries — an amendment that would affect future presidential elections and benefit more conservative candidates. At the time, Trump’s political ideology was viewed skeptically by some conservatives.

“By not having a closed primary, we have Democrats that often pick the candidates. They either pick the weakest candidate, or they pick the most moderate or more liberal candidate in many, many, many of our races,” Hageman said at the time, adding that it would be very helpful for her state in Wyoming.

“We believe it ought to be the Republicans picking our nominees, not Democrats,” she said.

In her statement to CNN, Hageman did not address her vote to “unbind the delegates” at the 2016 RNC convention in an effort to stop Trump from becoming the Republican nominee, but highlighted her support of closed primaries.

“It’s true that I was a Cruz delegate at the convention in 2016, as were most of the Wyoming delegates. Like me, there were a lot of people who initially supported other candidates and then came to rally behind President Trump when he won the nomination,” she said.

Five years later, Trump has endorsed Hageman for Wyoming’s only congressional seat, saying earlier this month that she had his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”

Family desperate for bone marrow donor for teen

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Houston-area family hopes the greater community can help save their son’s life.

Diego is a 15-year-old who lives in The Woodlands with his family. He’s currently battling a relapse of an aggressive form of leukemia. He’s already received a blood and bone marrow transplant from one of his two brothers, but he desperately needs another one. Unfortunately, there is no matching donor in the national Be The Match registry.

“You don’t realize that your life can change in just one minute, because of a thing like this,” Diego’s mother, Mariana, told ABC13. “He’s a young man – he understands what’s happening and what’s ahead of him. He’s very strong.”

In hopes of finding a match to save young Diego’s life, there’s a Donor Drive Saturday in The Woodlands. It’s being held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the South County Community Center. The family said they are desperate for donors of Hispanic and Latin descent, as the patient’s ethnicity plays a huge factor in matching – and numbers are low in Diego’s demographic.

“About 13% of the Be the Match registry is Hispanic or Latino, and it is a fairly low number,” explained Erica Sevilla with the National Marrow Donor Program. “We absolutely need more diversity.”

People between the ages of 18 to 40 are encouraged to come to The Woodlands and swab their cheeks for 10 seconds and insert their own sample into an envelope. The sample will then be entered into the national/international marrow donor registry and tested to see if it can be used in a transplant and help save a life.

If you’re unable to attend the Donor Drive for Diego in person, you can text the name “DIEGO” to 61474, fill out the information form and have a swab kit mailed to your home. You can also register at the Be The Match website.

“We absolutely need to find a donor match for Diego – this could save his life,” Erica added. “And so we really hope that the entire community will come out and just put themselves in the shoes of his parents, they need to they need you to come out and to and to help him.”

“Go and get tested,” Mariana pleaded. “It’s just a simple act that could change the life of a kid.”

Suicide rate among active duty service members increased by 41% between 2015 and 2020

The suicide rate among active duty service members increased by 9.1% in 2020, according to data from the report, which was released Thursday. From 2018 to 2020, it rose 15.3%.

The suicide rate among reserve members of the US military went up by 19.2% in 2020, but the rate has overall gone down since 2018, the report shows. The suicide rate among National Guard members increased by 31.7% in 2020, but has also gone down overall since 2018.

Some 580 members of the military, among active duty, reserves and National Guard, died by suicide in 2020. The report also shows 202 military family members died by suicide in 2019.

“The findings are troubling. Suicide rates among our service members and military families are still too high, and the trends are not going in the right direction,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement Thursday.

‘We must redouble our efforts’

The report also says the rate of suicide among reserve members did not significantly “increase or decrease.” The report says there was no “statistically significant increase or decrease” for suicide rates among National Guard members between 2015 to 2020.

The department did not see any impact from Covid-19 on statistical suicide rates from 2019 to 2020, Defense Suicide Prevention Office Director Dr. Karin Orvis said Thursday during a briefing about the report. However, the report acknowledged that the pandemic could be one of multiple factors that contribute to well being and suicide risk.

“We must redouble our efforts to provide all of our people with the care and the resources they need, to reduce stigmas and barriers to care, and to ensure that our community uses simple safety measures and precautions to reduce the risk of future tragedies,” Austin said.

Service members who died by suicide in 2020 were “largely enlisted, male and less than 30 years of age,” the report said. The majority of service members who died by suicide did so by firearm, followed by hanging or asphyxiation as the second most common method, the report said.

Suspected suicides at Fort Drum

In the span of two days this month, three military service members at Fort Drum in New York died in suspected suicides. An investigation into the cause of death for all three men is ongoing, according to Lt. Col. Josh Jacques, a spokesperson for Fort Drum.

Private First Class Tyler S. Thomas, 21, died on September 16. Staff Sgt. Angel G. Green, 24, and Specialist Sika M. Tapueluelu, 26, died on September 17, Jacques said.

Green had recently deployed with his unit to Afghanistan twice, returning from his most recent deployment on September 6. “Officials do not believe the primary reason was because he just returned from a deployment,” Jacques said.

“Immediately when we have a situation when a soldier is suspected of taking their own life, we want to know the trigger. What are the underlying challenges that contributed to the decision to harm themselves? We want to know what didn’t we catch? What are we missing? This is what our immediate focus is,” Maj. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr., Commander of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, said in a statement obtained by CNN Thursday.

Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth and Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. James McConville, along with Austin, say they recognize that more needs to be done to combat the issue of suicide in the military.

“Suicide remains a significant challenge for our Army,” Wormuth and McConville said in a joint statement about the annual report. “While there is no clear understanding of what is causing the increase in suicides, we realize we have to do better in preventing suicide and ensure resources are available and readily accessible.”

To get help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). There is also a crisis text line. For crisis support in Spanish, call 1-888-628-9454.

Windy Fire has destroyed more than two dozen giant sequoia trees — and that's just an early assessment

That toll is only an early assessment.

Garrett Dickman, a wildfire botanist with Yosemite National Park, has been tasked with preparing the trees as the wildfire encroaches on sequoia groves, then working to cool the trees after the fire burns through. Part of his job is assessing the trees to see how they fared after the flames move away.

While the assessment is just beginning, there’s already grave concern. The center of Long Meadow Grove managed well, thanks to work crews did in preparation for the fire, but moving away from that area, Dickman counted 29 sequoias that were “just incinerated” by the blaze.

“There were four of those that had burned so hot that they’d fallen over,” Dickman said, adding one tree burned so badly that it was nearly reduced to just an outline of a tree on the ground.

“The majority of the grove is going to survive,” Dickman said, “but there are portions that burned so hot and those trees won’t make it.”

Elsewhere in the forest, Dickman has seen even more devastation. In Starvation Creek Grove, which he says has no modern fire history, he said he saw only “a couple of trees survived.”

“It was one of the groves where we got a few hours of prep work and those trees that we did the emergency prep work around, from the picture, they are the ones that did survive and all the rest of them — it doesn’t look promising,” Dickman said, adding that he plans to assess the grove in the next few days.

Firefighters battle the Windy Fire as it burns in the Trail of 100 Giants grove of Sequoia National Forest on September 19.

Only found in California’s the Sierra Nevada, giant sequoia trees are capable of living for more than 3,000 years and soaring to more than 200 feet high. But 10% to 14% of the world’s giant sequoias were lost in the 2020 Castle Fire alone.

As wildfires continue to burn longer and hotter amid unrelenting drought, there’s concern that this year’s fires could do far more devastation. The drought has made trees and brush dry and brittle — easy for wildfires to burn through.

“Those fuels are on the ground and the fuel is dry,” Dickman explained. “You can buy a two-by-four from Home Depot and it has more water in it than the trees there on the ground. When they burn, it’s 100% consumption.”

Dead sequoia trees in Longmeadow Grove in Sequoia National Forest.

As the assessment of the trees continue, so does the fire fight. The US Forest Service is putting together a task force to go into the sequoia groves and scrape around the base of the trees, and to put out fire still burning in some of the trees’ root systems. For example, a couple of smokejumpers, specially trained wildland firefighters, are scaling the iconic Bench Tree in the Trail of 100 Giants to attack a fire in the canopy of a nearby tree.

“They’re going to climb that tree … with a hose and squirt over to the other tree and try to put that thing out,” said Nathan Judy, public affairs officer for the US Forest Service.

As for the potential loss of sequoias, Dickman says he’s not sure yet whether this fire season will end up being as devastating as last year was for the giant trees.

“After the Castle Fire, I think we have to brace ourselves for something that could be much worse,” Dickman said, noting that some of the groves will experience new growth. “There’s a difference between a 2,000-year-old tree and one that’s 15 years old — like one’s a landscaping plant and one is just like a spiritual experience.”

CNN will no longer publish content on Facebook in Australia

CNN says it will no longer publish content to Facebook in Australia. The decision comes after the country’s highest court ruled that media companies are liable for comments people post under articles on the platform.

Earlier this month, the High Court of Australia dismissed an argument brought by three major Australian news organizations that they could not be held responsible for comments people post on their Facebook (FB) news pages. The news outlets had appealed a lower court ruling.
After that ruling, CNN approached Facebook and asked if the tech firm would “support CNN and other publishers by disabling the comment functionality on their platform in Australia,” a CNN spokesperson said in a statement, adding that Facebook “chose not to do so.”
“We are disappointed that Facebook, once again, has failed to ensure its platform is a place for credible journalism and productive dialogue around current events among its users,” the CNN spokesperson said, adding that the media outlet will continue to publish on its own platforms in Australia.
Facebook does allow people and publishers with Pages to turn off comments to posts, or otherwise limit the ability for people to comment to selected Pages and profiles — a feature the company announced in March.
In this case, CNN asked Facebook to offer a Page-wide setting to turn off comments in Australia, according to a CNN source. Instead, Facebook provided instructions for how the media organization could disable comments post by post.
A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement that the company supports the “ongoing reform of Australia’s defamation law framework” and looks forward to “greater clarity and certainty in this area.”
“While it’s not our place to provide legal guidance to CNN, we have provided them with the latest information on tools we make available to help publishers manage comments,” the spokesperson said.
The case the High Court ruled on began with a defamation lawsuit filed by a former detainee in the Australian youth detention system. His treatment at a detention center made him the center of a 2016 abuse scandal, and he later sued Fairfax Media Publications, Nationwide News and Australian News Channel because comments made on their Facebook pages accused him of crimes his attorney says he did not commit.
The media companies argued that they shouldn’t be held responsible for user comments, appealing that particular issue all the way to the High Court. In its dismissal of the argument brought by the media organizations, the High Court wrote earlier this month that the “appellants’ attempt to portray themselves as passive and unwitting victims of Facebook’s functionality has an air of unreality.”
“Having taken action to secure the commercial benefit of the Facebook functionality, the appellants bear the legal consequences,” the High Court wrote, adding that the appeals court “was correct to hold that the acts of the appellants in facilitating, encouraging and thereby assisting the posting of comments by the third-party Facebook users rendered them publishers of those comments.”
The High Court’s ruling did not resolve the underlying defamation case against the publishers, which has since returned to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
It’s been a contentious year for Australia and Big Tech. In February, Facebook suddenly blocked people from seeing or sharing news in the country after months of tension with the Australian government, which had proposed legislation that would force tech platforms to pay news publishers for content.
Facebook eventually restored news pages in Australia after the government agreed on changes to the planned media code. The tech company said those changes would allow it to retain greater control over what appears on its platform.

Boris Johnson’s Brexit choices are making Britain’s fuel and food shortages worse

Rising energy bills, higher prices and a critical shortage of workers leading to food and fuel supply constraints are threatening to stall Britain’s recovery from the pandemic.

The crises afflicting the UK economy have sparked talk in newspapers and among politicians of a looming “winter of discontent,” a reference to the wave of strike action in 1978-79 that brought the British economy to its knees. There’s even talk of stagflation, the nightmare combination of stagnant growth and high inflation.
Although shortages, supply chain delays and rising food and energy costs are affecting several major economies, including the United States, China and Germany, Britain is suffering more than most because of Brexit.
Specifically, the form of Brexit pursued by the UK government — which introduced stringent immigration policies and took Britain out the EU market for goods and energy, making it much harder for British companies to hire European workers and much more costly for them to do business with the country’s single biggest trading partner.
It didn’t have to be this way — there were other options for a future EU-UK relationship. Worker shortages, for example, were not an inevitable outcome of Brexit, nor was going it alone on energy. But in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s ideological rush to “get Brexit done” amid fraught negotiations with the European Union, agreements in several crucial areas, including energy, were sidelined.
The UK government’s post-Brexit immigration system, meanwhile, was designed to reduce the numbers of unskilled workers coming to Britain and end what the government described as the country’s “reliance on cheap, low-skilled labor,” despite a domestic unemployment rate in the region of just 5%.

“Ultimately, the government made a political decision to make low-skilled immigration more difficult,” said Joe Marshall, a senior researcher at the Institute for Government, an independent think tank. “Labor shortages may have been less severe if the UK had retained free movement of people post-Brexit,” he added.
Britain had a record 1 million job vacancies between June and August, according to the Office for National Statistics. Restaurants, pubs and supermarkets, including Nando’s, had to temporarily close some locations last month due to staff shortages or because certain ingredients weren’t delivered as a result of fewer truck drivers.
The adult social care sector also faces a “workforce crisis” and will need to recruit overseas workers to fill tens of thousands of vacancies, according to Care England, which represents independent providers.
Supply chain constraints exacerbated by Brexit means that UK consumers are facing surging food and energy bills at the same time that pandemic support measures are being unwound, including government support for wages and a £20 ($27) weekly uplift to social security payments.

Truck driver shortage

This week the UK government was forced to partly back track on its stringent post-Brexit immigration policy after thousands of gas stations ran dry over the weekend and food retailers warned that the country had just 10 days to “save Christmas.”
In an interview with broadcasters on Tuesday, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps acknowledged that Brexit “no doubt will have been a factor” in contributing to the fuel supply crisis.
To ease the pressure, the government will issue temporary visas to 10,500 foreign truck drivers and poultry industry workers. But industry groups say the measure won’t make much difference, in part because it’s unclear whether EU workers want to come back to a country that’s become more hostile to their presence.
“The UK is unlikely to be attractive to foreign drivers [who] have understandably elected to be with their families because of a combination of Covid and Brexit,” said Tim Doggett, CEO of the Chemical Business Association, whose members have also experienced shortages of vital materials.
“In addition, conditions of services and roadside facilities for drivers are better [in Europe],” he added.
British Chambers of Commerce President Ruby McGregor-Smith said that even if short-term visas attract the maximum numbers allowed, “it will not be enough to address the scale of the problem that has now developed in our supply chains.” She likened it to “throwing a thimble of water on a bonfire.”
The UK military is now preparing to help deliver fuel amid warnings from the British Medical Association that healthcare workers, including ambulance drivers, won’t be able to do their jobs as pumps run dry, although the Petrol Retailers Association has said that there are “early signs that the crisis at pumps is ending.”
Vehicles are seen outside a petrol station in London on September 27.

The shortage of drivers has been exacerbated by Brexit, which resulted in tens of thousands of EU nationals leaving trucking jobs and other occupations in the United Kingdom. Johnson’s decision to end the free movement of workers following Brexit has also made it more difficult for Europeans who had returned home during the pandemic to come back.
While many have a right to remain in Britain, they have been made to feel “pretty unwelcome” because of Brexit, said L. Alan Winters, founding director of the UK Trade Policy Observatory at the University of Sussex.
“Covid was just the straw that broke the camel’s back, in the sense that things have just become less pleasant here [for EU workers],” he added.
The exodus of workers is a major problem for many sectors, which over four decades of EU membership had come to rely on a steady inflow of labor.
“The supply of EU labor was turned off with no clear roadmap as to how this transition would be managed without disruption to services and supply chains,” said McGregor-Smith. “A managed transition, with a plan agreed between government and business, should have been in place from the outset.”
UK clothing retailer Next (NXGPY) said on Wednesday that without “some relaxation of immigration rules” it risked disruption to its business before Christmas because of the difficulty of recruiting seasonal warehouse and logistics staff.
It added that the truck driver shortage had been “widely predicted for months.”
“For the sake of the wider UK economy, we hope that the government will take a more decisive approach to the looming skills crisis in warehouses, restaurants, hotels, care homes, and many seasonal industries,” the company said in an earnings report.

Food supply vulnerable

A recent Grant Thornton report commissioned by the food and drink industry estimated that there are in excess of 500,000 vacancies across the sector.
Farms and food processors have been forced to cut back production or simply let crops go to waste because they don’t have enough workers. That’s leading to reduced ranges of products at supermarkets and in some cases empty shelves.
Empty shelves are seen at a supermarket in Manchester, Britain, on September 22.

“The labor crisis is a Brexit issue, and one that has been widely reported across the food and drink sector,” Richard Griffiths, chief executive of the British Poultry Council, said in a statement last month.
According to Nick Allen, the CEO of the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA), a lot of farmers simply haven’t reared turkeys in the lead up to Christmas because labor supply was so uncertain.
“There will be a shortage [of turkeys],” Allen told CNN Business, adding that other Christmas favorites such as gammon and pigs-in-blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon), will likely also be in short supply.

DHS releases priority-based immigration enforcement guidelines

The department is returning to Obama-era immigration enforcement measures based on a priority system instead of the more aggressive approach taken under the Trump administration. That approach, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas argues, takes into account the department’s limited resources and the fact that a “removable noncitizen should not alone be the basis of an enforcement action against them.”

Mayorkas pledged to release guidelines after assuming the helm of the department. Like the guidance released in February, Thursday’s guidelines focus on national security, public safety and border security, but they place a greater emphasis on an officer’s discretion.

The department will prioritize certain undocumented immigrants for arrest and deportation, including terrorism suspects, someone with serious criminal conduct or recent unlawful border-crossers.

“These guidelines don’t take a categorical approach. They call for an individualized determination in each case. Assess the individual, investigate the facts, understand the totality of the facts and circumstances and then make a determination whether the individual in fact poses a public safety threat,” Mayorkas told reporters Thursday.

A ‘targeted’ approach

In the memo issued Thursday, Mayorkas writes that there are an estimated 11 million undocumented people in the US. “We do not have the resources to apprehend and remove every one of these noncitizens,” he wrote to the acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tae Johnson.

In exercising discretion for immigration arrests and deportations, Mayorkas says the department is guided by the fact that a majority of the undocumented immigrants in the US have been “contributing members of communities for years,” including people on the frontlines battling Covid-19.

The new guidelines call for a “targeted” approach to immigration enforcement.

For example, an undocumented immigrant who is suspected of terrorism or espionage is a priority for apprehension and removal, according to the memo.

As is someone who poses a “current threat to public safety, typically because of serious criminal conduct.”

The memo acknowledges that public safety threats won’t be determined by “bright lines or categories” but instead requires an assessment of the individual and the totality of the circumstances.

Aggravating factors could include serious prior criminal history or use of a weapon.

Meanwhile, mitigating factors could be age, mental health or a lengthy stay in the US.

An undocumented immigrant is considered a “threat to border security” if they are arrested at the border or port of entry attempting to unlawfully enter the US or if they are apprehended within the US after unlawfully entering after Nov. 2020.

The new guidance takes effect in 60 days on November 29, 2021, replacing the interim guidance released in the early hours of the Biden administration.

The Trump administration expanded the scope of arrests, removing targeted enforcement and repeatedly promising that anyone in violation of immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and deportation.

Legal challenges

But enforcement priorities are already the subject of ongoing litigation. A federal appellate court this month largely halted a judge’s order blocking the administration’s enforcement priorities.
The case, brought by Texas and Louisiana, challenged a memo issued in the beginning of President Joe Biden’s term that instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement to focus its arrests on certain undocumented immigrants, particularly those who posed national security risks or had serious criminal histories.
The 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals found that the provisions do not eliminate immigration officials’ “broad discretion” to decide who should face enforcement action, according to the ruling. The part of the injunction that was not put on hold is already in line with general enforcement protocol.

“For these reasons, we do not see a strong justification for concluding that the (Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996) detention statutes override the deep-rooted tradition of enforcement discretion when it comes to decisions that occur before detention, such as who should be subject to arrest, detainers, and removal proceedings,” the ruling, written by Judge Gregg Costa, reads.

“That means the United States has shown a likelihood of prevailing on appeal to the extent the preliminary injunction prevents officials from relying on the memos’ enforcement priorities for nondetention decisions,” Costa added.

The panel was made up of two Obama appointees and a George W. Bush appointee.

With the 5th Circuit’s decision, the lower court order will be largely paused while the case plays out on the merits — unless the red states successfully seek an intervention from the full 5th Circuit or the US Supreme Court.
