Parents threaten to unenroll children over masks


A petition signed by more than 1,300 people all but threatens action if the Ankeny Community School District reinstates a mask mandate.It is a paragraph in an online petition that reads “Ankeny parents signing this petition are opposed to a mandatory mask policy and willing to unenroll their children for the Oct. 1 enrollment certification date if mask are mandated again.”Unenrolling a student from the district before Oct. 1 would come at a cost of more than $7,000 per student unenrolled.More than 1,000 students unenrolling from a school district could be devastating to the district and its students.The Ankeny Community School District is aware of the petition and responded with a statement, “We recognize that parents and guardians have the right to unenroll their student(s) from the district at any time for any reason.”A district parent tells us whether to mask or not should not be the schools decision.”I think it is 100% important, up to the parents I should say,” said Tyler Maldonado, parent of an Ankeny public school student.Maldonado says he has not signed the petition but has heard of it.He tells KCCI he will sit down with his family and they will make the decision whether or not his son wears a mask to school.
