Zoo works to save sick sea turtles

Sick sea turtles are washing up on beaches in Central Florida and throughout the state. A pair of pliers is used to remove barnacles from a young sea turtle’s shell. The sick turtles cannot clean their shells and get a buildup of algae, barnacles, shrimp and leeches. Right now, there are too many of them coming into the Brevard Zoo’s rehab center. “We took in three this morning, six yesterday and nine the day before. It’s kind of an all-day event,” Dr. Kyle Donnelly with the Brevard Zoo said. Some of the turtles have obvious injuries, like a loggerhead with a horrifying boat collision wound that took off a flipper. Many of the green turtles, a rarer and more endangered breed, have mysterious illnesses doctors cannot readily identify. They get fluids, antibiotics, food and the best care that volunteers and techs, working overtime, can give. “I would say eight out of ten turtles that we get, they spend a few months with us and we’re able to let them go again,” Donnelly said.Sick turtles do tend to show up more often around this time of year. However, this year there are more than usual. Researchers are working to find out if it’s a widespread disease that threatens the population, or just a short-term phenomenon. The Brevard Zoo accepts donations to help care for the sick sea turtles. Click here to find out how to donate.

College students, 1st graders, learn about kindness

FORT MYERS

Students at Florida Gulf Coast University are teaching a younger generation about kindness, compassion and empathy.

You probably wouldn’t think there’s any subject college students and first graders could learn together, but it turns out, there is, and WINK News got to witness it.

“We’re spreading kindness and compassion and empathy,” said Julianna Griffin, who teaches a class at FGCU called “Understanding Kindness, Compassion and Empathy.”

“I hope this program one day makes my students kinder, more compassionate, and more empathetic citizens,” said Colleen Bowman, a first grade teacher at San Carlos Park Elementary.

Every Thursday, their two classes meet over Zoom, and on this particular Thursday, the students gave a joint “presentation” of sorts.

The FGCU students donated books to foster children, books that Bowman’s class picked out.

Bowman’s class donated teddy bears to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, which will give the bears to children at crime scenes or crashes.

Jessie Santero, Lee County Sheriff’s Office

So, if you think there isn’t a subject that college students and first graders can learn together, you’d be wrong.

“I learned more from them than I was probably able to teach them about kindness myself. They showed me at such a young age how kind you can be,” said FGCU student Lars Gartelmann.

“I’ve learned being kind doesn’t come with an age range; it doesn’t take a grown man or grown woman to be kind,” said Ashlee Blewis, another FGCU student.

“The most important lesson I learned is … doesn’t have to be some large thought process, I’m gonna do this for kindness, this for compassion, it can just be sitting next to someone in class,” said FGCU student Ryan Iversen.

Each college student got to individually mentor one or two first graders this semester.

After Thursday’s presentation, those FGCU students were rightfully bragging about how many kind acts they’ve seen their mentees do.

Wildlife center braces for animal baby boom

A wildlife center in the Poconos is gearing up for an animal baby boom.

TOBYHANNA, Pa. — Springtime means baby season: bear cubs, fawns, baby squirrels, and many more.

“It starts in a wave across the springtime. It starts with squirrels and then bunnies, and then we get baby owls and hawks and then fawns and raccoons and skunks, and last year we raised a baby otter,” said Kathy Uhler of Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center.

Some of those orphaned babies are brought to Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center near Stroudsburg for help.

The volunteers and workers there have to feed those babies with expensive specialized formula, and they just made a big order.

“Well, this is what we use; it is called Fox Valley Formula. These are made specifically for special kind of mammals. Each of the buckets I just showed you is over 200 dollars a bucket, and we go through 35 to 40 buckets a year of formula,” said Uhler.

The volunteers and workers at the wildlife center say they could not do it all without donations, and they are thankful so many pitched in to help.

“I know that times are really tough out there, there are a lot of organizations needing help, but we looked through our records last year. We served 18 counties in Pennsylvania, and we are now the only wildlife organization serving that entire area, and so we really do need our community’s help. We couldn’t do this without them.”

There are opportunities to donate online to the rehabilitation center.

Mom devastated after son's senseless death

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — We’re hearing from the mother of a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed in what appears to be a random act of violence. Antonio Walker Jr. was gunned down on the 5200 block of Pentridge Street last night in Southwest Philadelphia.

“I am devastated. My life will never be the same,” Nydisha Williams said.

Williams decided to speak with CBS3 late Wednesday afternoon, hopeful her son’s legacy would be more about the peaceful young man he was, his love of painter Bob Ross and his intense respect for Elon Musk.

“He was just so in tune with things which you would never even think about. He just was a thinker,” Williams said.

The weather was nice and Antonio was visiting his cousin on Tuesday in Southwest Philadelphia.

A car rolled by, a window lowered, a firearm emerged. And then shots. Antonio was hit. He was an innocent bystander, now dead.

“And then, following the gunshots, you could hear laughter coming from inside the vehicle. So this appears to be an indiscriminate shooting,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said.

Antonio joins an alarming database of juvenile fatalities in Philadelphia. Records show juvenile homicides are trending 200% higher than this time last year.

“I’m not even worried about the crime being solved. I’m just worried about people understanding who my son was as a person,” Williams said. “That’s just how hopeless I am as the police, the detectives, of this city.”

There have been no arrests in Antonio’s killing.

Mayor Jim Kenney responded to our Jessica Kartalija’s question Wednesday about what the city will do about gun violence and children victims?

“What I’m hoping is we get back to normal, get things opened up, get kids back to school and then have our violence prevention people be able to interface with folks at risk and on a more person-to-person basis, we can drive these numbers down. But they are upsetting and heartbreaking,” Kenney said.

Detectives are searching for a silver Ford Taurus, which they believe the shooter was riding in.

Homicide officials believe three lead factors are driving the rate of violence among children — the availability of guns, beefs on Instagram, and how children are interacting with each other because they are not in school.

Everyone from the Philadelphia police commissioner to the mayor and activists agrees gun violence — especially involving children — has got to stop. But doing that as the pandemic lingers is no easy task and the results are leaving families devastated.

“Gun violence doesn’t discriminate against children,” said Aleida Garcia of the Philadelphia-based National Homicide Justice Alliance.

Garcia helps families seek justice for murdered victims after she lost her own son to Philly’s violent city streets back in 2015.

“It really is like losing a piece of yourself, like an arm or a leg. It’s horrific,” Garcia said.

Garcia says police need to solve more homicide cases to show criminals they’re being taken seriously. She also wants tougher gun laws to keep firearms away from criminals and Garcia believes city leaders need to show more concern around gun violence.

“The mayor should come out on a weekly basis and start talking to the community,” Garcia said.

Antonio’s mom wants change.

“We need better leadership,” Williams said.

In a statement, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said, “I implore the community to be proactive and remain vigilant. The duty to protect these children belongs to all of us. The public has my full assurance that the Philadelphia Police Department is doing everything possible to curb gun violence in the city.”

Meantime, a balloon release and candlelight vigil for Antonio is set for 5 p.m. Thursday at 58th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard. Organizers ask attendees to bring candles and black balloons.

CBS3’s Joe Holden and Matt Petrillo contributed to this report.
